10 Reasons Electric Car Maintenance is Easier Than Gas Powered Cars

Why is electric car maintenance so much easier than maintenance on ICE (internal combustion engine) cars? EVs are the future and we’ll go through why.

Electric Car Maintenance

There are many advantages of owning an EV and most people’s favorite is the lower operating costs compared to gas-powered cars as a result of less maintenance being required on electric vehicles. Here are the best 10 reasons why EVs are easier to maintain.

10. Longer Overall Lifespan

The lifespan of EVs continues to grow with battery packs capable of outlasting gas-powered equivalent cars. The industry standard manufacturers guarantee for battery cells are eight years or 100,000 miles.

Polestar 2 batteries can last up to 400,000 miles, something my dealer supported with my Polestar 2 MY23 long range dual motor if I charge it to a maximum of 90% capacity.

9. Software Updates

Fewer moving parts makes electric car maintenance far more easier compared to cars with internal combustion engines. Updates are done OTA (over the air) to fix any software bugs and the Polestar 2 can even have performance upgrades done remotely, with a download boosting the Long Range Dual Motor by 50kW and 20Nm to a total output of  350kW and 680Nm.

8. Less Moving Parts

Maintenance on electric cars is far less than gas-powered cars because there’s far fewer moving parts. EV’s aren’t going to cause issues such as engine misfires, timing belt or valve issues.

7. No Exhaust System

There are no exhaust systems or tailpipe emissions to worry about with electric car maintenance. Having to worry about exhaust pipe or catalytic converter repairs are a thing of the past for EV owners.

6. Longer Service Intervals

Longer service intervals saves both time and avoids the inconvenience of having to take your car to the mechanic. The typical frequency for maintenance on electric cars is every year or two depending on the manufacturer, or at 12,500 miles.

5. Fewer Fluids

Electric cars are far simpler than ICE vehicles thanks to their streamlined build. There are no multi-gear transmissions or engines to cool down as EVs operate off a single-speed transmission that regulates the electric motors speed. That means, no transmission fluids or coolants are required.

4. Reduced Brake Wear

Regenerative braking on EVs is industry standard. The feature kicks in when the accelerator is depressed and the energy from the cars spinning wheels reverses the direction of electricity which helps slow the vehicle down, capturing the energy to charge the battery. That means far less wear and tear on brake pads and reducing brake maintenance.

3. No Oil Changes

No internal combustion engines means no oil changes during electric car maintenance. That also eliminates the needs for oil filters, issues with engine oil viscosity or having to dispose of it.

2. Fewer Trips to the Mechanic

With fewer parts in an EV, electric car owners can expect fewer breakdowns. The frequency for maintenance on electric cars is far less. There’s no need for EV owners to worry about oil changes, fuel filters or spark plugs.

1. Lower Maintenance Costs

My Polestar 2 requires servicing every two years or 30,000km. The added bonus is that servicing is free for the first five years or 100,000km. With all the benefits of electric car maintenance mentioned above, maintenance costs are far lower than ICE cars.
